Morphological Characteristics
Sulcorebutia rauschii is a stunning miniature cactus species known for its tight clustering habit and vibrant skin tones. Each globular head is small (1–3 cm diameter), with deep vertical ribs and tubercles. The skin color ranges from deep purple to violet or green, depending on light and stress levels. Tubercles are accentuated by white, recurved spines that create a cobweb-like pattern across the surface.
In spring, it produces showy magenta to pink flowers, usually from the base of the clusters, which contrast beautifully with the dark body color.
Growth Habits
Forms dense mats of offsets over time, making it a compact and space-efficient collector’s specimen. Very slow growing and well-suited for small pots and rock-style arrangements. Grows best in cool, dry conditions and with careful watering practices.
Maintenance Points
• Lighting: Bright indirect light to full sun. Intense light enhances pigmentation.
• Watering: Water deeply but sparingly. Allow soil to dry out completely between watering. Withhold water during cold months.
• Soil: Requires gritty, well-draining cactus mix with sand or pumice.
• Temperature: Thrives in 60–85°F (16–29°C). Hardy to just below freezing if dry.
• Fertilizer: Low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer during growing season, monthly.
• Pests: Mostly resistant. Avoid excess humidity to prevent rot.
Display & Use
Excellent for small ceramic pots, windowsill trays, or cactus bonsai compositions. Its jewel-like color and compact form make it a favorite in rare cactus collections. Pairs well with other dark-toned or geometrically structured miniatures like Gymnocalycium or Ariocarpus.
