Stomatium mustellinum, botanically listed as Stomatium mustellinum, is a live succulent plant selected for its distinctive form and ornamental appeal. Natural color, size, form, and presentation may vary slightly with season, maturity, and growing conditions.

Morphological Characteristics

Stomatium mustellinum is a compact, low-growing succulent from South Africa, well known for its unique paired leaves and sweet-scented, night-blooming flowers. The plant forms tight clumps of opposite, fused leaf pairs that resemble small, angular mouths—hence the name “Stomatium,” meaning “mouth” in Greek. Leaves are thick, dark green to gray-green, and often finely textured with warty or dimpled surfaces.

Mature leaf pairs are usually 2–3 cm long, with flattened tops and small, soft teeth along the margins. In late summer or fall, this species produces daisy-like yellow flowers that open in the evening and emit a pleasant fragrance.

Growth Habits

This is a mat-forming, slow-spreading succulent that hugs the ground closely. It thrives in arid conditions and prefers stable environments. Though relatively small in stature, its clumping habit makes it well-suited for small pots, rock gardens, or dish gardens. With time, it forms dense mats that resemble living stones.

Maintenance Points

Lighting: Requires bright light to full sun. Outdoors, place in a sunny location. Indoors, use south- or west-facing windows.

Watering: Water sparingly—allow the soil to fully dry before watering again. Very drought-tolerant.

Soil: Well-draining cactus mix, ideally with added sand or pumice.

Temperature: Best kept between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from frost below 40°F (4°C).

Fertilization: Feed lightly once a month during active growth with diluted succulent fertilizer.

Handling: Very low-maintenance; avoid overwatering.

Pests: Rarely affected by pests, but mealybugs or root rot may occur in poor conditions.

Display & Use

Stomatium mustellinum is perfect for miniature gardens, rockscapes, or collectors’ trays. Its quirky geometry and night-fragrant flowers make it a delightful addition to any succulent collection. Combine with other small, stone-like succulents such as Lithops, Titanopsis, or Pleiospilos for a naturalistic, desert-themed arrangement.
