Morphological Characteristics

Senecio haworthii is a compact, upright succulent shrublet prized for its distinctive white, woolly foliage. The leaves are cylindrical, slightly curved, and densely coated with fine, silky hairs, giving them a fuzzy “cocoon-like” appearance. The overall color ranges from silvery-white to light gray-green, depending on age and lighting.

The plant grows up to 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) tall, branching slowly from the base over time. During summer, mature plants may produce small yellow daisy-like flowers on tall, slender stalks that rise above the foliage.

Growth Habits

This species grows slowly and remains compact. It branches gradually, forming a bushy shape over time. Its upright structure makes it a suitable candidate for small containers, windowsills, or as a textural accent in mixed succulent displays. It thrives in dry, sunny conditions and is best grown in containers where water can be controlled.

Maintenance Points

Lighting: Prefers full sun to bright, indirect light. Indoors, place near a sunny window.

Watering: Water deeply only when soil is fully dry. Avoid overwatering—very sensitive to root rot.

Soil: Requires very well-draining cactus or succulent soil. Add pumice or coarse sand to improve aeration.

Temperature: Best between 18–27°C (65–80°F). Not frost-hardy—protect below 5°C (41°F).

Fertilization: Feed with diluted succulent fertilizer monthly during active growth in spring and summer.

Handling: The delicate white fuzz can be rubbed off easily—handle gently to preserve its appearance.

Pests: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for mealybugs and spider mites in indoor settings.

Display & Use

Senecio haworthii is ideal for modern containers, white ceramic pots, or minimalist garden designs where its texture and silvery tone can contrast with dark green or red-leaved succulents. Often used as a feature plant in succulent arrangements or collector’s displays. Excellent for dry environments and easy-care decor.
