Obesum Sedum, botanically listed as Sedum lucidum ‘Obesum’, is a live succulent plant selected for its distinctive form and ornamental appeal. Natural color, size, form, and presentation may vary slightly with season, maturity, and growing conditions.

Morphological Characteristics

Sedum lucidum ‘Obesum’ is a compact and vibrant cultivar of Sedum lucidum, a member of the Crassulaceae family native to Mexico. This variety is admired for its glossy, chubby leaves and bright coloration, especially during colder months or when exposed to strong light.

The plant forms a small, upright, branched structure with rounded, fleshy, jade-green leaves that are distinctly thicker and more rotund than the standard Sedum lucidum, hence the name ‘Obesum’. Leaf tips often blush red or reddish-orange, especially in cooler temperatures or bright sun, providing seasonal interest.

The leaves measure about 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 inches) long and are densely packed around the stems, forming attractive rosettes. In late winter to early spring, ‘Obesum’ produces small star-shaped white flowers, clustered in loose groups on short inflorescences above the foliage.

Growth Habits

Sedum lucidum ‘Obesum’ is a slow-growing, upright succulent, usually reaching 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) in height. It tends to form small clumps or mounds through basal branching. This cultivar stays relatively compact, making it ideal for windowsills, succulent bowls, or miniature gardens. Over time, it may trail slightly, making it suitable for hanging planters as well.

Maintenance Points

Lighting: Prefers bright, direct light or full sun. Exposure to sunlight enhances leaf color and keeps the plant compact. Indoors, place near a south-facing window for best results.

Watering: Water only when the soil is completely dry. It’s drought-tolerant but sensitive to overwatering. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is semi-dormant.

Soil: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus soil mix. Add perlite or pumice for extra drainage.

Temperature: Thrives in 18–27°C (65–80°F). Can tolerate light frost (down to -2°C / 28°F) if kept dry but should be protected from prolonged cold.

Fertilization: Feed lightly once a month in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced succulent fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter.

Potting: Use small pots with drainage holes. Repot every 2–3 years in early spring or when the plant outgrows its pot.

Humidity: Prefers low humidity and good airflow. Avoid excessive moisture around the leaves.

Reproduction Method

1. Stem Cuttings:

• Cut a healthy stem with several leaves.

• Allow the cutting to callus over for 2–3 days in a dry, shaded area.

• Plant in well-draining soil and water lightly once rooted.

2. Leaf Cuttings:

• Gently remove a full, healthy leaf.

• Let it callus, then place on dry soil. Mist lightly until roots and plantlets emerge.

3. Offsets:

• Occasionally produces side shoots at the base, which can be separated and replanted.

Additional Tips

Pest Control: Watch for mealybugs and aphids, especially in leaf axils. Treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Prevention: Ensure good drainage and avoid water on leaves to prevent rot or fungal infections.

Pruning: Trim back leggy or dried stems to maintain a full, compact shape.

Display: Looks fantastic in ceramic planters, succulent arrangements, or color-contrasting groupings with darker or trailing plants.

Safety Note: Non-toxic and safe for pets and children. Always handle gently to avoid damaging fleshy leaves.

With its plump, glossy leaves, vibrant red tips, and easy-care nature, Sedum lucidum ‘Obesum’ is a delightful addition to any succulent collection, ideal for small containers, windowsills, or bright garden edges.
