Morphological Characteristics
Sedum japonicum ‘Tokyo Sun’ is a vibrant, low-growing succulent prized for its brilliant neon yellow foliage. The leaves are small, fleshy, and tightly packed on slender stems, creating a dense mat of color that glows in strong light. The plant retains a compact, moss-like appearance and spreads horizontally, making it an excellent groundcover or accent for container gardens.
The intense golden color is most vivid in bright light and can shift toward lime green in lower light or cooler temperatures. In spring or early summer, it may produce tiny, star-shaped yellow flowers, although the foliage remains the main ornamental focus.
Growth Habits
This is a fast-growing, mat-forming succulent ideal for edging, filler, or contrast planting in rock gardens and dish arrangements. It stays low to the ground and expands gradually through shallow roots and spreading stems.
Maintenance Points
• Lighting: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Direct sunlight enhances yellow color intensity.
• Watering: Drought-tolerant. Water when soil is completely dry. Avoid overwatering.
• Soil: Requires well-draining soil. Cactus or succulent mix with added sand or perlite is ideal.
• Temperature: Best between 18–26°C (65–79°F). Protect from frost below 0°C (32°F).
• Fertilization: Optional; feed lightly with diluted succulent fertilizer in growing season.
• Trimming: Occasional pruning helps maintain a tidy form and prevent legginess.
