Split Rock Pleiospilos, botanically listed as Pleiospilos nelii, is a compact mimicry succulent known for its thick, clefted leaf pair that resembles a split stone. Natural color, size, form, and presentation may vary slightly with season, maturity, and growing conditions.
Morphological Characteristics
Pleiospilos nelii forms a low, sculptural body made of very thick, paired leaves divided by a central fissure. The leaves are typically gray-green to olive-toned with a speckled surface that strengthens the plant’s stone-like appearance. Mature plants may produce daisy-like flowers from the center of the leaf pair under favorable seasonal conditions.
Growth Habits
This South African mesemb stays compact and grows slowly, making it well suited for small pots, collector displays, and bright dry windowsill settings. It develops new leaf pairs from the central split as older leaves gradually decline.
Maintenance Points
- Provide bright light and excellent airflow.
- Use a very fast-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix.
- Water carefully and only after the medium has dried thoroughly; avoid persistent moisture around the roots.
- Keep the plant protected from prolonged cold, wet conditions.
Reproduction Method
Pleiospilos nelii is most commonly propagated from seed. Established specimens should be handled gently during repotting because their compact root systems and water-storing leaves are sensitive to excess disturbance.
