Morphological Characteristics
Lithops optica ‘Rubra’ is a rare and visually captivating cultivar of living stones. Unlike most Lithops, this variety features a vibrant reddish-purple to magenta hue, especially under strong sunlight. Its body consists of two thick, fused leaves forming a smooth dome with a central fissure, resembling a small pebble or stone. The vivid color intensifies during dormancy or stress, adding dramatic contrast in any succulent collection. Mature size typically remains under 1 inch (2.5 cm) in height and width.
Growth Habits
A slow-growing, solitary species that thrives on seasonal watering patterns. It enters dormancy in summer and resumes active growth in fall and winter, often splitting and regenerating from its central fissure.
Maintenance Points
• Lighting: Needs bright light or filtered sun. Can take full sun with gradual acclimation.
• Watering: Water only during active growth (typically fall to early spring). Never water during dormancy.
• Soil: Use extremely well-draining gritty soil with minimal organic content.
• Temperature: Thrives at 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from frost and excess humidity.
• Fertilizer: Rarely needed. Use diluted cactus fertilizer once per year in early growth phase.
• Handling: Avoid overwatering and unnecessary repotting. Gentle handling is key due to fragile skin.
• Pests: Watch for root mealybugs; excellent airflow helps prevent rot.
Display & Use
Perfect for collectors, Lithops optica ‘Rubra’ excels in minimalist arrangements, rocky topdressings, and translucent pots that highlight its gem-like color. It pairs beautifully with other small Mesembs or muted succulents for color contrast.
