Miniature Copiapoa, botanically listed as Copiapoa tenuissima, is a live cactus plant selected for its distinctive form and ornamental appeal. Natural color, size, form, and presentation may vary slightly with season, maturity, and growing conditions.
Morphological Characteristics
Copiapoa tenuissima is a miniature clumping cactus species known for its sculptural beauty and tolerance to extreme arid conditions. It forms tight clusters of spherical to short cylindrical stems, each measuring around 2–4 cm (0.8–1.6 inches) in diameter. Mature clusters can eventually span 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) wide.
The stems are dark green to grayish-green and are often densely covered in fine white wool at the apex. Each stem bears numerous areoles with short, curved, dark brown to black spines that contrast beautifully with the plant body.
In summer, this species produces small, funnel-shaped yellow flowers at the apex of mature heads. The flowers are diurnal and add a delicate contrast to the plant’s rugged form.
Growth Habits
Copiapoa tenuissima grows slowly but steadily, forming attractive mounded clusters over time. It is adapted to intense sun, drought, and mineral-poor soils, making it highly resilient in cultivation when grown in proper conditions.
It is an ideal species for collectors of rare cacti, rock garden setups, and minimalist pot displays where the plant’s natural clustering can be appreciated.
Maintenance Points
• Lighting: Full sun to bright light. Outdoors, place in direct morning and filtered afternoon sun. Indoors, a south-facing window or grow lights are ideal.
• Watering: Water sparingly during active growth (spring–fall). Allow soil to dry completely. Withhold water in winter when dormant.
• Soil: Use a gritty, mineral-rich, well-draining cactus mix. Avoid high-organic content.
• Temperature: Prefers 20–30°C (68–86°F). Protect from frost—minimum safe temperature is around 5°C (41°F).
• Fertilization: Apply diluted cactus fertilizer once per month during active growth. Skip feeding in winter.
• Handling: Minimal handling preferred—spines and wool are easily damaged.
• Pest Resistance: Very resistant to pests if grown dry with good airflow. Occasionally check for spider mites or mealybugs.

Copiapoa tenuissima is best suited for:
• Collector trays or rock-scaped pots
