String of Pearls, botanically listed as Senecio rowleyanus, is a live succulent plant selected for its distinctive form and ornamental appeal. Natural color, size, form, and presentation may vary slightly with season, maturity, and growing conditions.

Morphological Characteristics

Leaves:

The String of Pearls has small, spherical leaves that resemble green pearls. These bead-like leaves are typically 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6 to 1.3 cm) in diameter and grow along trailing stems. The leaves are slightly translucent, allowing for photosynthesis to occur even in lower light conditions.

Size:

This succulent has long, trailing stems that can grow up to 3 feet (90 cm) or more in length. The plant itself remains relatively compact, with the trailing stems providing the most dramatic growth.

Flowers:

String of Pearls produces small, white, daisy-like flowers with a pleasant, cinnamon-like fragrance. These flowers appear on thin, elongated stalks and usually bloom in the summer.

Growth Habits

Light:

Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day, can scorch the leaves. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but this may slow its growth and cause the stems to stretch.

Temperature:

Thrives in a temperate climate and needs to be protected from frost, as it is not cold-hardy. Ideal temperatures are between 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) during the growing season and a minimum of 50°F (10°C) during the winter.

Water:

Watering should follow the “soak and dry” method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Be cautious of overwatering, which can lead to root rot. In the winter, reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy.

Maintenance Points

Soil:

Well-draining soil is crucial; a cactus or succulent mix is ideal. Adding perlite or sand can improve drainage.

Pot:

Use a pot with a drainage hole to prevent water accumulation. A hanging basket is a popular choice to show off the trailing stems.

Fertilizer:

During the growing season (spring and summer), you can feed the plant with a diluted, balanced, liquid succulent fertilizer once a month to encourage growth.

Pruning:

Pruning is generally not necessary, but you can trim the stems to maintain the plant’s shape and encourage fuller growth. Remove any dead or shriveled beads to keep the plant healthy.

Reproduction Method

Stem Cuttings:

The most common method of propagation is by stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) long, remove a few of the bottom beads, and allow the cutting to dry for a day or two. Place the cut end in well-draining soil and keep it slightly moist until roots develop.

Offsets:

String of Pearls may occasionally produce offsets that can be separated from the mother plant and planted individually.

Seeds:

Growing from seeds is less common but possible. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining medium and kept moist until germination. This method is slower and less reliable than propagation by cuttings.

String of Pearls is prized for its unique appearance and is an attractive addition to any succulent collection. Its trailing stems make it ideal for hanging baskets, adding a decorative touch to indoor and outdoor spaces. Its care requirements are straightforward, making it suitable for succulent enthusiasts of all levels.
