📝 Description

Morphological Characteristics

Kalanchoe delagoensis, commonly known as Mother of Millions, is a member of the Crassulaceae family and is renowned for its prolific, succulent nature. This plant features tall, slender stems that bear numerous narrow, tubular leaves. The leaves are typically green with brown or purple spots and have a distinctive, cylindrical shape. One of the most notable characteristics of this plant is the small plantlets that form along the edges of the leaves, which can drop off and root easily, leading to its common name, Mother of Millions. During the growing season, it can produce clusters of small, tubular, pink to orange flowers on tall inflorescences.

Growth Habits

Kalanchoe delagoensis is a fast-growing succulent that adapts well to various environments. It thrives in warm climates and can tolerate a range of conditions, including drought and poor soil. This plant is often found growing in rocky or sandy soils in its natural habitat, which provide excellent drainage.

Maintenance Points

Lighting: This plant prefers full sun to partial shade. It thrives in bright light but can tolerate some shade, especially during the hottest part of the day. Insufficient light may lead to leggy growth and reduced production of plantlets.

Watering: As a succulent, Kalanchoe delagoensis requires minimal watering. The soil should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings. Over-watering or poor drainage can lead to root rot.

Soil: A well-draining succulent or cactus mix is ideal, potentially enhanced with additional perlite or sand to improve drainage.

Temperature: It does best in temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F). Avoid exposure to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) to prevent cold damage.

Fertilization: Feed lightly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season; however, too much fertilizer can harm the plant, so it should be done sparingly.

Reproduction Method

Kalanchoe delagoensis is known for its ability to propagate easily through the small plantlets that form along the edges of its leaves. To propagate:

1. Plantlets: Gently remove the small plantlets from the edges of the leaves. Place them on the surface of well-draining soil and water sparingly until they root and establish themselves as new plants.

2. Stem Cuttings: Cut a healthy stem from the parent plant and let it dry for a few days until the cut end forms a callus. Plant the callused end in well-draining soil and water sparingly until roots develop.

3. Leaf Cuttings: Similar to stem cuttings, remove a leaf, let it callus, and then place it on well-draining soil. Water sparingly until roots and new growth appear.
